Black and White Animals

Life Concentric (2015 – present) is an ongoing series of nature-inspired ink drawings on paper. The works in this series offer my interpretation of how perfectly interconnected life is at every level – as above, so belew. Each work is built using geometry found in all living things (think Fibonacci sequence, golden ratio, and sacred geometry). A personality derived from indigenous beliefs mark these characters while hidden biological features such as habitat, diet, and life cycle stages offer the viewer insight into the animal’s world and priorities. As a result, the work captures an integrated perspective of the natural world, connecting math, science, anthropology, ecology and philosophy. Apart from highlighting the beauty of connection and nature, the objective is to emphasize—through personal engagement—the wealth that comes from taking an interdisciplinary approach to life, work and play. Defined by intersecting circles, the geometric patterns and mathematical ratios used represent the common structure underlying all living beings, while the play between the animal and its smaller hidden features are arranged as parts of an individual indistinguishable from the greater biosphere. Some images draw on ecological aspects, while others highlight unique reproductive or feeding habits. The personality of each animal reflects the beliefs indigenous peoples attribute to each being and our kinship relationship to them. The associated quotes draw on virtues that can be learned from these animals and our beliefs about them. Overall, the series invites the viewer to reflect on their relationship with the natural world and to consider how truly amazing the interconnectedness of it all is.
