Stag Beetle Silhouette Reproduction

This black and white, drawing of a silhouetted stag beetle was formed on a geometric foundation of vesica pisces using techniques like stippling, hatching, and detailed line work. Named after the large antler-like jaws of adult males, their mandibles are used to battle for mates during a short-lived breeding season. Adults only live a few weeks. Stag beetles spend most of their lives as larvae (3-7 years) underground feeding on rotting wood and microorganisms. Their declining population is due in large part to loss of habitat for this most important developmental stage. As a symbol, the stag beetle represents rebirth, eternal life, endurance, and determination.
 
The original drawing is acid-free, archival ink on 100 lb bristol paper (6" x 6" | 15 cm x 15 cm). Hand drawn in 2023 by Sarah Skiold-Hanlin.
